For what it's worth, a common direction or goal for soc can/should be agreed upon.
Our original goal was to help new players acclimate to the game. Perhaps our goal was honorable, but with over 650 unique members joining and leaving soc, we acted more as a bus terminal than a society. Most were kicked for inactivity, some were disciplinary and a small percentage left either due to outgrowing soc or frustration over soc drama llamas. That leaves 4.17% of members who joined and are still around or left but came back (28 out of 672, or 1 in 24), that goal or at least its execution, was a failure.
As society evolved, so did its goals; from noobie accumulation and acclimation to promoting skilled, knowledgeable, experienced Entropian citizens. This too was an honorable goal, but after two years and many promising challenges met, interest in society and camaraderie, seemed to all but dry up, leaving behind two distinct camps. Those that are active and play and those that aren't and don't. In some respects this worked, as this goal cultured some very dedicated, skilled, bonded and active players. Opposingly, many players viewed this goal as too lofty, difficult and unattainable, choosing to lurk or quit instead. Whatever their reasons, this goal too, or its execution, was a failure as well.
Now we look ahead once again.
To quote Alexa's quote, I quote "...definition of a society that states: A voluntary association of individuals for common ends; especially : an organized group working together or periodically meeting because of common interests, beliefs, or profession;"
So now the question is posed once again. What are our common interests, beliefs or professions? What are we, all of us, willing to get behind and support as a commonly uniting theme? Hint: Silence or whining are not acceptable answers
